In 1999 my wife Ona and I seemed to live a dream life.  We spent Summers at our island cottage in Kipawa Quebec and flying back and forth in our amphibian, Sept and a bit of Oct in France, November and December in NJ, January through early April on our sailboat in Florida, and  again in May doing lake trout fishing at our cottage in Quebec.

It was a dream life until in 2001 when I experienced chest pains and ended up with stints in my heart.  I was lucky that I had symptoms.  Also lucky as I did not have a heart attack .(For 42 %  of the population the first symptom is death)

That forced retirement 10 months early in November 2001. ----2002 was a good year for us both.

Then in 2003 Ona developed serious breast cancer.  She underwent an mastectomy at Sloan Kettering, NYC,  followed by normal chemo followed by 18 months in an experimental study for the new drug Herceptin which seems to attack her type of cancer successfully.   So 2004 was taken with weekly chemo.   Then in 2005 my PSA had a sudden jump.  It was cancer.  I had my prostate removed at Sloan Kettering in NY.

2006 looked good until I overdid it and ended up with a bulging disk and spent the summer lying on my back.

This year, 2007 looked great.  We were both feeling 50 years old.  We had recently purchased a new boat, the Charlemagne, for our fleet at Canal & Co in Europe and we took a Charlemagne cruise on the Mosel River in Germany in June.  In July a pet scan showed enlarged lymph nodes under Ona's sternum on the same side as the mastectomy.  That meant complicated surgery to remove the lymph nodes (under her sternum) to check for cancer. It was not cancer.

Through all this we have been very lucky.  God has been on our side.  We are still here.  But recently I called a priest friend of mine who I went through grade school with, and said "Bernie, please ask your boss to lighten up on us.

With the loss of our retirement and my 2000 sale of Aero-Marine I had to reinvent myself to maintain the style of life we would like to continue to enjoy.  Our apartments in Paris and London continue to bring us an income.  Three years ago 3 friends and I started Canal & Co, a luxury cruise line which operates in France, Holland, and Germany.  www.canalandco.com     I also banded with two other pilots to buy and develop a small resort/marina in Fort Lauderdale, FL    www.fortlauderdale-vacation-rentals.com  Ona and I spend winters there living on our 42' power boat.

Recently I joined two other retired pilots to begin a school for advanced GA pilot training.  I have a Cessna 185 amphibious float plane and a Cessna 182 RG.   It is good to be back flying again.  I do flight training for  a former high level EXO Officer of United Airlines, who owns a Cirrus franchise.  He lost his retirement as well and has had to reinvent himself.  So between the cruises, apartments and flying we are quite busy.  But we have great help.

Ona and I are blessed with 6 children, Bill, Wendy, Marie (all her children), Didier, Francoise, and Cecile (the children of my best friends who both died of cancer in the 90's within a few years of each other, she was 50 and he was 56).   Ona and I adopted the kids and promised their father to always to be there for them.

We have 4 grand children, William age 9, Anna Sophia age 18 months, and in France,  Lynn born May 1, 2007 and Jeremy who was born Dec 29, 2007.   We have had visits with many of our JFK pilots and always enjoy the memories.   You are always welcome to join us.   201 401 0780 reaches us.

I recently ran into Bob at the AOPA convention in Hartford.  Bob has the most infectious laugh of anyone I ever met.  Ed

God only created one Don Dugas.  I will never forget the picketing he did at Sandy Hook during the strike.  Ed

John Downey had a brilliant mind.   During the JFK days he wrote a song that he gave to the JFK initial campagne which was call the JFK ROCK.  It was a very catchy toon.    Later he made up a jingle for a jello like product of General Foods.   They altered it a slight bit but it aired none the less.

I was priviledged to fly with John as a S/O when he was F/O and later as his F/O on 727's.   It was always a pleasure.  John had the happiest way of looking at life of anyone I have ever known.   ED
